The photo is of the "Friday Night Lights" at my old high school. The picture really gets to me because all throughout high school, football was the most important thing in everyone's lives. I went to a small-town high school in Bulverde, Texas. Smithson Valley's football players were legends in our town. The boys knew exactly how to play the game and they lived, breathed, and loved the game. But they weren't only playing for them. We all got something out of their sport. Every Friday night, the big "SV" on the hill lit on fire, the lights shone brightly on the field, and every one in town parked as far as highway 46 to get to the game. Since graduating in 2010, that's the only thing I've missed about Smithson Valley: the lights, the crowd. After a long week, we all united on the bleachers to cheer on our boys. I haven't had that sense of relief in over a year, and, thankfully, UTSA finally adopted a football team of their own where, coincidentally, football players from my Smithson Valley class were recruited.
This picture not only reminds me of everything I miss about the old Smithson Valley tradition, but also instills excitement about the new traditions that are blossoming here at UTSA. It may only be a sport, but I've seen much more school spirit come out of this university because of football, and I can't wait to see how much more we can get.
